Grim Review #3: "Opposite Day"
Howdy
folks. Turtle here with another Grim Review. Today I'm here to talk
about the episode “Opposite Day”. Let's get to it, shall we?
Title card from the Grim Adventures wiki
Our
story begins with Billy and Grim heading out to Mandy's house. Grim
mentions how much he hates the two of them.
“You
and that wretched girlfriend of yours are bad enough separately, but
together, you're insufferable.”
“Insufferable?
I don't even know what that means. Hey wait! She's not my girlfriend.
She's just a friend who happens to be a girl. Just like I happen to
be a boy and you happen to be a skeleton. It's the differences that
make our world so rich, diverse, and wonderful.”
Unless
they're a giant spider, I suppose.
Billy
says this will be a special day, only to correct himself by saying
it's ordinary. Grim is a little confused by this. The two arrive, and
Mandy answers saying there is no one home. She tells them to leave.
Billy waltzes right in and Grim leaves. Mandy informs Grim that it is
Opposite Day: whatever you say means the opposite. The trio play
video games, only for Grim to become frustrated.

As
Grim quits, Mandy suggests he do her chores. Grim refuses, but since
it's Opposite Day, that means he accepts. Grim is seen complaining,
and notes that Billy and Mandy don't deserve him. Mandy walks in and
apologizes, saying that Grim doesn't have to do her chores. Billy
quickly comments that it's Opposite Day, meaning he actually does
have to do them.
After
Grim is finished mowing the lawn, Mandy urges him to kiss her dog
Saliva. Grim refuses, but since it's Opposite Day, he actually
accepts. Grim briefly fantasizes about killing Billy and Mandy.
We're
going to wondering why he just doesn't do it for the whole series,
aren't we?
The
three sit to eat lunch. After some more “no means yes”
shenanigans, Grim busts out his scythe and swings it at the kids,
only to cut the pie on the table instead. Billy remarks that they
deserve pie, but Grim tries to turn their game against them by say
they do deserve pie means they don't. Billy and Mandy reveal that it
was never Opposite Day to begin with.
The
plot is nothing but Grim getting messed with and used. I don't find
it that funny either. The reveal could've been less confusing, too.
It'd be much simpler to say “We lied” than to say “We said it
was Opposite Day, meaning it
wasn't Opposite Day”.
That's still using Opposite Day logic.
Outside
of a small bit with the game controllers' design, there weren't
really any jokes. Nothing,
but Grim getting used.
The
episode was rather annoying to sit through. It's just one big joke on
Grim, with no jokes for the audience. If misery goes great with pie,
like Billy claims, then you may need some after watching this
episode.
